Watch the lawn, not only the clock

Edges, raised seams, sunny areas and spots near hardscape can dry more quickly than the centre of a roll.

Installation day

Begin watering promptly so the sod and prepared soil beneath are evenly moist. Check that water reaches corners and narrow strips rather than assuming sprinkler coverage is uniform.

Days 1–7

Keep the root zone consistently moist without creating prolonged puddling. Minimize foot traffic, inspect seams and adjust watering for shade, wind, heat and rainfall.

Days 8–14

Continue monitoring moisture while checking whether roots are beginning to resist a gentle lift at a corner. Avoid pulling established sections loose simply to test them repeatedly.

First cut

Wait until the turf has started rooting and the surface is firm enough for mowing. Use a sharp blade, mow when the grass is dry and avoid removing too much height in one pass.

Weeks 3–4

As rooting improves, transition from frequent surface watering toward deeper, less frequent watering appropriate to the soil and weather. Keep watching for dry edges and runoff.

Why remove the old grass instead of placing sod over it?

Old turf and thatch separate new roots from prepared soil. The buried layer can remain uneven, trap moisture and decompose below the new lawn. Removing it creates a clean base for grading and root contact.

What makes Toronto clay soil challenging?

Clay can compact and drain slowly, especially after construction traffic or repeated saturation. A sod project should consider surface grading, soil condition and how runoff enters or leaves the lawn rather than treating every site as the same.

Can sod be installed in every season?

How much new soil is needed?

There is no responsible universal depth for every property. The answer depends on the existing material, compaction, finish elevation, drainage correction and the amount of soil that must be removed or added to create a consistent rooting layer.

How often should new sod be watered?

The initial objective is to keep the sod and upper prepared soil evenly moist without prolonged puddling or runoff. Frequency changes with heat, wind, shade, rainfall, soil and sprinkler coverage. As roots establish, watering should transition toward deeper and less frequent applications appropriate to the conditions.

When can children and pets use the lawn?

Traffic should be minimized while seams are vulnerable and roots are establishing. Resume normal use only after the sod is resisting movement and the soil is firm enough that feet or paws do not leave ruts.

What should happen if a seam or corner dries first?

Correct the coverage issue quickly. Narrow strips, curves and edges beside warm hardscape can dry faster than broad central areas. Hand watering may be needed to supplement sprinklers in these locations.
